Raiders of the Lost Code: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Promises Retro-Futuristic Adventure in Early Access

For decades, the thought of wielding Indy’s whip and fedora within a fully realized video game world has been a tantalizing prospect. Now, with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle dropping into Early Access on PS5, that dream is closer than ever to becoming a reality. Developed by MachineGames, the studio behind the critically acclaimed
Wolfenstein reboot, and published by Bethesda Softworks, this latest foray into the archaeological adventurer’s universe is already generating significant buzz. But is this a groundbreaking relic or a dusty artifact best left unearthed?

Our hands-on with the Early Access build reveals a game brimming with potential, offering a tantalizing glimpse into what could be a truly epic Indiana Jones experience. Set in 1937, a year before the events of “The Last Crusade,” the game sees Indy drawn into a shadowy conspiracy involving ancient artifacts and a sinister organization seeking to exploit their power. This familiar, yet welcome, narrative backdrop immediately sets the stage for the globe-trotting,
puzzle-solving, and pulp-action that fans have come to expect.

The core gameplay loop shines in its Early Access state. MachineGames has clearly learned from their previous successes, blending intense first-person combat with environmental puzzles and moments of keen exploration. The combat feels visceral and satisfying. While not as overtly brutal as their work on B.J. Blazkowicz, Indy’s brawling is weighty, punctuated by satisfying cracks of the whip, well-placed punches, and a commendable reliance on environmental hazards. Dodging and parrying are crucial, and taking down a group of thugs with a combination of brute force and clever use of your surroundings feels incredibly rewarding. The whip itself isn’t just a combat tool; it’s integrated into traversal and puzzle-solving in ways that hint at clever design. We saw early examples of using it to swing across gaps, pull levers from afar, and even disarm opponents.

Exploration is another key pillar, and the environments presented so far are stunning. From the dusty tombs of ancient ruins to bustling marketplaces, the attention to detail is impressive. The art direction leans into a slightly more stylized, retro-futuristic aesthetic, which feels both authentic to the era and visually distinct. Expect to be deciphering cryptic inscriptions, piecing together forgotten mechanisms, and generally using your wits to progress. The signature Indiana Jones sense of discovery is palpable, and the environments are begging to be scoured for hidden secrets and valuable artifacts.

However, as with any Early Access title, there are rough edges. The narrative, while promising, is still unfolding, and the full scope of the story and its characters remains to be seen. We encountered a few minor graphical glitches and occasional animation hiccups, which are to be expected in a pre-release build. Performance, while generally stable on our PS5, will undoubtedly be refined further before the full launch.

One of the most exciting aspects is the potential for the game to truly capture the spirit of Indiana Jones. The developers have clearly done their homework, incorporating iconic elements like the fedora, the whip, the plane adventures, and that inimitable blend of intellectual curiosity and daring action. The early voice acting also hints at a compelling portrayal of the beloved archaeologist, capturing his characteristic wit and determination.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle in Early Access on PS5 is more than just a promising game; it’s a love letter to a franchise that has captivated audiences for generations. While it’s not yet a finished masterpiece, the foundations laid are incredibly strong. The satisfying combat, engaging puzzles, and evocative atmosphere all point towards a title that could very well live up to the legend of its titular adventurer. For fans eager to get their hands on the whip early and contribute to the development process, this Early Access release is a compelling invitation. The treasure awaits, and we’re eager to see if this “Great Circle” leads us to true archaeological gaming gold.
