After decades of hesitation from Nintendo to license its properties for film adaptations, Mario creator and video game icon Shigeru Miyamoto became interested in a new movie when the company was bringing its older games to the Virtual Console service. Through a series of meetings with Illumination founder Chris Meledandri, Nintendo eventually announced in January 2018 that it would work with Illumination and Universal to produce the film.
In September 2021, the film’s cast was officially announced, featuring an ensemble of notable names such as Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, the original voice of Mario Charles Martinet, and Kevin Michael Richardson.
The animated movie will be the third film adaptation of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, following the Japanese anime film from 1986, and the live-action film from 1993. After a small delay, the movie is now scheduled for release in the United States on April 7, 2023, and in Japan on April 28.
To further increase anticipation for the upcoming film, a full trailer was debuted back in November, giving fans their first look at the Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser’s island, and some aspects of other Mario games like Mario Kart. Fans can also look forward to seeing promotional material and posters that have recently been released.
Although Pratt’s casting as Mario might have given some fans worries, this new film looks to be full of the pure Super Mario magic that has captured the hearts of so many across the world.
The Super Mario Bros. movie, set to be released in 2022, has a lot to live up to considering the success of other adaptations. The Last of Us HBO series, for example, was widely praised for its faithful adaptation of the source material, and its use of incredible visuals and powerful storytelling to bring the story to life.
The Super Mario Bros. movie must use the same level of detail and faithfulness to the source material as The Last of Us in order to be successful. While the movie will likely take some liberties with the original story, it must still remain true to the spirit of the game. It must also use impressive visuals and clever writing to bring the world of the Mushroom Kingdom to life in an exciting and entertaining way. In addition, the movie must also have a compelling story that keeps viewers engaged and invested in the characters.
It will be interesting to see how the Super Mario Bros. movie lives up to the success of other successful adaptations. If done right, it could be an incredible and entertaining experience for fans of the game and newcomers alike.
