After decades of hesitation from Nintendo to license its properties for film adaptations, Mario creator and video game icon Shigeru Miyamoto became interested in a new movie when the company was bringing its older games to the Virtual Console service. The animated movie will be the third film adaptation of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, following the Japanese anime film from 1986, and the live-action film from 1993. After a small delay, the movie is now scheduled for release in the United States on April 7, 2023, and in Japan on April 28.
