GoldenEye 007’s New Ports Fall Short

After years of anticipation and speculation, GoldenEye 007, the beloved first-person shooter from Rare, has finally made its way to modern consoles. While this is certainly cause for celebration for many fans, the reality is that these new ports are not quite up to par.

On the one hand, it is now possible to play GoldenEye on Xbox consoles and the Nintendo Switch, which is a major victory in and of itself. The game has been notoriously difficult to access due to rights issues, so the fact that it is now available to a wider audience is certainly a positive development. Keep in mind that Microsoft owns Rare, which may be a reason why the game is not available on a Sony console.

However, the port itself is lacking in several key areas. The Xbox version, for example, does not feature online multiplayer, which is a significant drawback. Additionally, the game is locked at 30 frames per second, which is a noticeable step down from the 60fps that many players have come to expect from modern games. Fans have also reported issues with low-res text and audio bugs, among other issues.

It’s worth noting that many of these issues have been addressed in fan-made mods for the PC version of the game, which have been available for years. However, it seems unlikely that the developers behind this new port will release any updates to address these issues.

Despite these shortcomings, it’s important to remember that GoldenEye 007 is a classic game that has stood the test of time. It’s still a blast to play, even with these issues. And for many fans, the fact that it is now available on modern consoles is a dream come true. While the port may not be perfect, it’s still worth checking out for fans of the original game.
