Hidemaro Fujibayashi, director of “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” has provided insight into the mysterious absence of Sheikah technology in the game, despite its prevalence in “Breath of the Wild.”
In “Breath of the Wild,” players encountered various remnants of Sheikah technology throughout the game world, from towers to weapons and mechanical foes. However, in “Tears of the Kingdom,” this once-ubiquitous technology has seemingly vanished, and characters like Purah and Robbie, who were deeply involved in Sheikah research in the previous game, remain silent about its disappearance. Fujibayashi recently addressed this puzzling absence in an interview with The Telegraph.
According to Fujibayashi, Sheikah technology disappeared after the defeat (and sealing) of the Calamity. He stated, “All of the people of Hyrule also witnessed this, but there is no one who knows the mechanism or reason why they disappeared, and it is considered a mystery. It is believed that since the Calamity disappeared, they also disappeared as their role had been fulfilled.”
The sudden disappearance of Sheikah technology is portrayed as a common phenomenon in Hyrule, where mysterious events and unexplained occurrences are not out of the ordinary. Fujibayashi suggests that, given the other enigmatic events happening in the world, Hyruleans have simply accepted the disappearance of Sheikah technology as another intriguing but unexplored mystery.
In “Tears of the Kingdom,” players have their hands full with new and inventive gameplay mechanics, such as constructing bomber jets, devising Korok torture devices, and creating statues with unique abilities, thanks to Link’s new Fuse ability. With these novel features in mind, the absence of Sheikah technology from the narrative seems to be a deliberate choice to focus on fresh gameplay experiences rather than revisiting the past.
As the game continues to unfold, players will undoubtedly find themselves immersed in the captivating world of “Tears of the Kingdom,” filled with mysteries, adventures, and a whole new array of surprises that keep them engaged.
